November 13, 2017 - The God Who Knows Us So Well

Memorial of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, Virgin

Scripture Readings

Is there someone close to you that knows you so well that they can anticipate what you are going to do or say? They know your likes, dislikes, how you think, and even all the little habits that make you unique.  Today’s readings and psalm remind us that God knows us better than we even know ourselves.  When we recognize God’s presence within, and allow Him to direct our paths, then Jesus tells us the tiniest bit of faith in this loving God will bring incredible results.

In the first reading, we are told that “the Spirit of the Lord fills the world” and “knows what man says.” The Responsorial Psalm describes how God is familiar with all of our ways. Even more than this, God rests His hand upon us and holds us fast.  There is deep sense of God being present everywhere- whether in the heavens, the nether world or the farthest limits of the sea. God is always there, and always ready to guide us.

In the gospel reading, Jesus is trying to explain to the apostles the power of faith in Him. He tells them that faith the size of a mustard seed is all that is necessary for the mulberry tree to be uprooted and planted in the sea. And yet what allows our faith to grow?

When we stop and recognize how intimately God knows every part of us, and how much He desires to be with us this “knowledge is too wonderful” and beyond our comprehension as the psalmist declares. If we accept and embrace God’s presence and we allow Him to “hold us fast”, then it is actually God’s Spirit that is working within us to guide us. This is the same Spirit that is the instrument of many miracles that are seen throughout scripture. The intimacy that God offers to us provides all that we need to help us grow in our faith and to open the flood gates of power and grace in our lives.

Similar to those people who know us so well, we must spend time with God for us to get to know Him (since He already knows everything about us.)  The more we rest in His presence and recognize His love, the more we can trust His Hand upon us to guide us in the right ways. It is through shared experiences with our spouses or friends that we are able to deepen these relationships. The same holds true for God and our relationship with Him.  When we invite Him into our lives, learn more about Him, and spend time with Him, then we can actually see how God is familiar with all of our ways. As time progresses and we deepen our love for God, then we nurture our faith and our growing faith unleashes God’s power in the world around us.

Creator God, You made us and fashioned from your deep love.  You know us, love us and call us to follow You.  With the grace of Your Spirit within help us to follow Your Son Jesus, so we can share Your love and mercy with our world. May we grow in our knowledge of You, so we can share Your Good News with all people.  We pray this through Christ our LORD. Amen.
